What are the Do's and Don'ts
Throughout the 30 Days of
The Chinese New Year?

There are 15 more days to go for the Chinese New Year.  Although everybody is back to work and all stores open, the festival is not over yet.

I want to share with you the DO's and DON'Ts that everybody follows, especially in the older generations and my family.

DO's
- Always say something positive with good luck and blessing to yourself and anybody
else you come across, including strangers.

A very good example is a glass fell on the floor and broke.  Every Chinese has this
response with his/her first reaction, "Just like a seed falls into the earth, grow and
  blossom"

DON'Ts
- NO haircut because hair symbolizes "wealth" and "prosperity".  Cutting hair means
  throwing your prosperity away.

- NO buying shoes.  Shoes is called "hai" in Cantonese which is very similar to the
exclamation of some bad things and/or complaints.

Sometimes, it is very difficult to overcome some temptations.  During this month,
shoes are always on sale because nobody wants to buy shoes.

My mom got a resolution about this a few years ago.  If we have to buy a pair of
shoes, buy a pen first.  Pen is called "bu" in Cantonese which has the same
pronounciation of "no" and "not".  Then, it will turn the negative meaning of shoes to
  be positive.

I am pretty superstitious.  So, I would rather wait.
